What is Reality Therapy
and Choice Theory?

Dr. William GlasserReality Therapy is a method of counseling developed by Dr. William Glasser in the 1960’s that continues to be taught in counseling and psychology programs all over the world. It is from the successful practice of this modality that Dr. Glasser formulated the concept of Choice Theory.

Thousands of people around the globe have changed their lives through the easy to learn, easy to apply concepts of Choice Theory that produces amazing results. It helps individuals under-stand why they do the things they do and to determine effective ways to respond. It gently shows clients how to take ownership of their behavior, and be responsible for the direction of their lives.William Glasser International

Reality Therapy’s basic premise is regardless of what has happened to us in the past and regardless of what we have done in the past, we are living in the present and making choices in the here and now. Reality Therapy helps clients become effective “self-evaluators” so they can learn to live healthy, self-controlled and responsible lives. The practice of Reality Therapy /Choice theory involves creating a trusting, friendly and realistic consulting relationship with the cli-ent and the following the specific procedures that lead to change.

Choice TheoryAs staff psychiatrist, Ventura School for Delinquent Girls in California, Dr. Glasser challenged himself to determine a way to motivate the stu-dents to want to learn and create better lives for themselves.

“If the girls there were going to learn new attitudes and skills to make it in society, then they would have to have dreams and hopes and plans for the future. And dreams don’t come out of failure.” Dr. Glasser

Early in his career, Dr. Glasser believed that the cause of almost all psychological symptoms was a person’s inability to get along with the important people in their lives. Dr. Glasser did not believe in the con-cept of mental illness unless there was something physically wrong with the brain that was confirmed by pathology.

On August 23, 2013, Dr. Glasser died in his home surrounded by family. The Glasser Institute for Choice Theory –US is one of the member organizations of William Glasser International, which promotes the work of Dr. Glasser worldwide. The late Dr. William Glasser wrote many books focused on human behav-ior. He founded Reality Therapy Psychology, resulting from his experience and research in a mental hospital and correctional institution. He believed a person chose their behavior; therefore he could alter it.

Reality Therapy helps individuals develop sufficient strength to handle life’s stresses in a responsible way. It teaches one to effectively face reality and to fulfill needs within that reality. Regardless of what has happened in the past, every problem is a current problem as each person is living and mak-ing choices in the here and now.

Counselors, psychologists, social workers and educators enthusiastically welcome his work and implement it in schools, clinics and correctional in-stitutions. Dr. Glasser developed an educational reform program known as “The Glasser Quality School”.
